It's no secret that some politicians think all lies are not created equal. They think deceiving the media is no terrible sin. They never think that in so doing, they also are lying to the public. Take outgoing County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates. Since she resigned, Atkinson Gates has acknowledged that she had been planning this for at least a year. Some journalists, including me, had called Atkinson Gates during the last year and asked her about rumors to that effect. We all got the same line: Not a chance. It gets worse: Gates also has acknowledged that when she ran for reelection in 2004, she knew she would not serve a full term. In that case, she didn't just lie to the media. She lied to her constituents.
