Letter: Good generals going to waste under Bush

Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 | 7:17 a.m.

Dave Dooley's Jan. 9 letter maintains that our Mideast adventures are more like World War III than Vietnam. Not yet, but it could be if we allow the Republicans to suck us further into that religious quagmire.

Too many Americans think that any war is a good war. They're suckers for a lot of superficial flag waving by politicians who are more interested in their personal aggrandizement than in the safety of our service personnel.

Too many Americans think that our opponents are incompetent fools. Mr. Dooley mentions General Giap of North Vietnam, a brilliant strategist and tactician. Gen. Westmoreland was no match for him.

Fortunately we've had some outstanding generals the past decade or so, but they're not doing us much good if the present White House continues to deal them losing hands.
