Letter: Embarrassed by America’s handling of Iraq
Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 | 7:17 a.m.
I am curious. How will history refer to the war that is presently being fought in Iraq? Is it a war against Iraq? I don't think so . At best, it is the war in Iraq. We can review what happened.
After 9/11, our president was given a vote by Congress to use force to defend America against terrorism. After sending troops to Afghanistan, where Osama bin Laden was reported to be, the focus was changed to Iraq, where Saddam Hussein ruled and had threatened Bush's father many years ago.
Without a solid plan, our troops devastated Baghdad as well as other cities, and a blunder was made to dismantle the Baath Army. The Baath Army was the only thing that might have prevented chaos from breaking out in Iraq.
While our troops have done a wonderful job over there, fighting and dying for a cause many of us still do not understand (we hope it is not just for the oil), each day brings us no closer to a solution. I am not sure we can even call this battle "The War in Iraq" because the battlefield over there certainly does not resemble a sovereign country anymore.
I am not going to hold back: The way this administration has handled the situation in Iraq embarrasses me.
