Letter: Officials just shuffle the homeless around
Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 | 7:08 a.m.
Homelessness has existed throughout history and will not go away. Are we so ashamed of our failures that we cannot admit to homelessness? Is that the reason we must keep chasing it from there to there? Authorities concentrate upon shuffling the homeless around in efforts to hide these truths of society. Does a temporary new site really hide it?
Modern society provides expensive "shelters," which turn away a few applicants through lack of space or facilities, but massive homelessness continues. Could it be that what today's homeless really want is simply a space for a simple shelter as "home?" They seem to believe that food, water and creature comforts will be found somewhere, somehow.
Surely our governmental bureaucrats can find ways to boost their egos through providing these simple demands for the homeless. A recently cleared corner of Main Street and Washington Avenue comes to mind as a test site. The area has existing basic water, sewage and electrical infrastructure, is for sale to a new owner, and will have to be cleared and cleaned prior to any future use anyway. True, it will not hide anything, however.
