Letter: Start with recycling survey, not test runs
Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007 | 7:25 a.m.
In all the discussions regarding trash pickup and recycling, has anyone thought to do a survey by phone or mail as to why the majority of the population in the Las Vegas Valley doesn't recycle? Wouldn't that be cheaper and more cost efficient than testing different plans?
Looking at my neighborhood, one out of eight houses, at best, recycles on a consistent basis. We requested additional containers from Republic Services, which were quickly delivered, knowing that most around us go unused.
Call us a trashy family, but our family of four generates quite a bit of trash in addition to very full recycling containers. We maintain our own lawn, so a lawn service isn't carting away our waste. Because of association rules, we must keep our trash in our garage until pickup day. I cannot even imagine the stench we will endure with once-a-week pickup.
Find out why people don't recycle and then move forward from there. Our family needs twice-a-week pick up , and we appreciate it very much.
