Letter: Putting into perspective brutality of sports
Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007 | 7:57 a.m.
John Dombek says in his July 28 letter that boxing and dogfighting audiences are the same because they both enjoy watching pain being inflicted and the violence necessary to inflict it.
There is no question that boxing is brutal. But other activities are also, and I wonder if Mr. Dombek has considered them.
Football, for example.
Some who have not watched the game may argue that the objective of football is not pain, whereas in boxing it is. Since it is reported that football is associated with the greatest number of catastrophic injuries compared with all other organized competitive sports, the difference is without a distinction.
People also enjoy watching pain being inflicted and the violence necessary to inflict it in the Jackie Chan movies. Perhaps Chan movie fans have, as Mr. Dombek says, a little Michael Vick in them.
