Letter: No constitutional right was denied Imus
Monday, April 23, 2007 | 7:36 a.m.
Some people are of the opinion that the firing of Don Imus was an infringement on Imus' First Amendment right to free speech. Here is a quick civics lesson. The First Amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, nor prohibit the free exercise thereof. Nor should they abridge the freedom of speech, or the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
Mr. Imus wasn't silenced by Congress or any branch of the government. He was tried and convicted by the court of public opinion. This is the same public that patronizes the sponsors of his show. Imus was fired for his racist, sexist comments, just like any other employee would be in a similar situation. Hopefully, we wouldn't allow our children to talk that way in the home either. These are just two examples of where the First Amendment right to free speech does not apply.
But don't feel sorry for Mr. Imus. He has made millions of dollars over the years and his legion of fans are certain to follow his hate-filled rhetoric when he is signed on by another radio or television station.
