Letter: Many conservatives blind to truth in Iraq
Monday, April 23, 2007 | 7:36 a.m.
If you are one of the 60 percent of Americans who think we should get out of Iraq, be aware that you can't win an argument with the 40 percent who want to fight on, because these people are true believers who refuse to accept the same facts that we work with. They only believe statements from the White House and comments from conservative spokespeople, like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter and the like.
They dismiss as leftist propaganda those reports on CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC, as well as in The New York Times and the Washington Post. In the conservative cocoon they have placed themselves in, the war is winnable if only we resolve to fight on, and those who want to set a time line after four years of futile fighting are traitors, and cut and runners, and want to wave the white flag.
Sen. John McCain symbolizes their thinking. After being escorted to a market surrounded by a cordon of troops, with helicopters flying overhead to protect him, he declared that it was safe to walk around Baghdad. Truly, these people have eyes but cannot see.
