Letter: Announcing deadline to leave Iraq is wrong
Tuesday, April 10, 2007 | 7:17 a.m.
What if the new Democratic Congress received the following letter:
"Dear Sen . Reid and Rep. Pelosi,
After careful consideration, my followers and I have decided that if we have not driven the U.S. armed forces from Iraq by March 31, 2008, then we shall cease all hostilities and victoriously return to our respective countries of origin. Supporting our insurgents as always, Osama bin Laden."
Do you think the "new" Congress would still insist that we pull out by March 31 ? I don't think that even our clueless congressional leadership would be that stupid. Yet, here they are, trying to pass legislation that tells our enemies that they can't lose. All the terrorists have to do is hang on for another year and then we'll be gone. What is Congress thinking? Setting deadlines and milestones for ending the war is one potentially positive thing. Telling your enemies what and when they are is sheer lunacy.
What if President Franklin D. Roosevelt had told Hitler we would quit if we hadn't won World War II within a year? If I had the freedom to write this letter, it would probably be in German or Japanese.
