The idea of Paul Gauguin bolting from Paris to a Polynesian paradise has long been romanticized as the ultimate escape from modern culture.

But more than 100 years later, satellite dishes and Internet connections make escape almost impossible. Brand-name sneakers, cell phones and big box stores are almost everywhere in our high-tech, commercialized world.

In his new exhibit, "Gauguin in the 21st Century," artist Michael Griesgraber revisits Gauguin's Tahiti, moving from the late 19th century to present day. His renditions of 15 Gauguin masterpieces include 21st century trappings: Wal-Mart, fast food, big-screen televisions and Hooters T-shirts. Even Van Gogh "googles" a Gauguin painting.

Before anyone can shriek blasphemy at the parodies, Griesgraber explains he's not "forcing any of this."

"You could actually go to that island and put up your satellite dish," he says. "There is no remotest paradise anymore. Even the natives are wearing Nikes and sunglasses."

He's right. Tahiti has McDonald's. Its Radisson offers high-speed Internet access and satellite TV.

Though based in parody, Griesgraber also pays homage to the French postimpressionist with explanatory placards next to each painting and a large text display that summarizes Gauguin's life and work.

And though the paintings are knockoffs, the reference to Gaugin's primitive style and use of color can be a refreshing reminder of another era.

Here's a sample of what you'll see:
