Crews gain on Sierra wildfire

Cooler temperatures, higher humidity and calm winds helped firefighters begin containment of a 1,504 acre wildfire burning in the Sierra.

The size of the Bassetts fire in the Tahoe National Forest 15 miles east of Downieville, Calif., and 1 mile north of California 49 was increased slightly on Thursday as smoke cleared, allowing more accurate mapping. The highway was closed because of smoke and fire equipment.

The fire was burning in heavy timber and steep terrain and was threatening several cabins. Some 200 people had managed to contain 57 percent of the blaze.

"We have a pretty good perimeter around the fire," U.S. Forest Service information officer Joanne Roubique said on Thursday. "We made pretty good progress last night."

In central Nevada, the Paiute Canyon fire 15 miles north of Winnemucca was contained at 2,300 acres after temporarily closing U.S. 95.

In southern Nevada, the 600-acre Pass fire four miles west of Good Springs was in mop up on Thursday.
