Letter: Which Gibbons is the more tragic figure?

"She is tall and lithesome, conservatively dressed, her beauty organic and her look prosperous ..."

Those were a Sun reporter's words describing Emily Herrera as she stood by her husband during his trial in April. Now we see Dawn Gibbons, conservatively dressed, beautiful, looking prosperous, smiling broadly, not a care in the world.

Is this the new liberated woman, able to transcend her husband's indiscretions, maintaining her personal independence and integrity despite her partner's embarrassments? Hillary Clinton became the prototype for the modern professional wife, giving priority to her career ambitions over domestic failures at home. The traditional marriage became somehow quaint as Hillary scoffed at stay-at-home moms in their kitchens baking cookies.

Have we reached the point where career and ambition trumps all else? I look at Jim and Dawn on public display, side by side, hand in hand. Jim, earnest and sincere. Dawn, smiling and supportive. I really can't decide who is the more tragic figure.
