FLASHPOINT for Oct 20, 2006
Friday, Oct. 20, 2006 | 8 a.m.
So how should the media be covering this story about a woman making charges of assault against Rep. Jim Gibbons - and then deciding not to pursue them? All I can say is - not the way we have. The ridiculous frothing and feeding frenzy shows us at our worst. It may well turn out to be the story of the year. But Woodstein did not implicate President Nixon until they had solid proof and Watergate was buried inside The Washington Post until they did. The approach here has been to go berserk - if only those resources had been used to cover the gubernatorial candidates' voting records - and declare to the world that this is the story of stories. But is it? We may never know.
