Letter: GOP failing to hurt Sen. Reid’s record
Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006 | 7:29 a.m.
I am greatly amused at the panic of the GOP in trying to make a big story over Sen. Harry Reid's good fortune and (gasp) making a profit on the sale of some property. I have watched CNN and other news networks and they cannot make it a big story, try as they may.
He did nothing illegal, he sold some property, and he probably made a mistake in how it was disclosed. He didn't take any bribes, didn't get taken to St. Andrew's Golf Course in Scotland by Jack Abramoff, or take millions in bribes like Republican Rep. Duke Cunningham. He didn't send suggestive e-mails to pages like Republican Rep. Mark Foley, and he didn't get convicted of taking bribes like Republican Rep. Bob Ney, who is refusing to resign his seat.
So the sum and substance of the whole Republican charade is nothing. When a story gets less than a couple of one-minute mentions on CNN's Lou Dobbs and Wolf Blitzer's "Situation Room," you know there is no story, because these pros don't waste their time on "nothing."
The GOP is simply adhering to the Karl Rove philosophy of smear and smudge your adversaries. It will not work this time.
