Wildfire burning in Mormon Mountains of southern Nevada

LAS VEGAS - Federal firefighters were battling a 600-acre wildfire Friday in the remote Mormon Mountains in southern Nevada, a federal fire spokesman said.

The addition of firefighters from Boise, Idaho, and the use of natural barriers like ridge lines had officials hoping the region's first big wildfire of the season soon would be contained, said Chris Hanefeld, spokesman for the federal Bureau of Land Management office in Ely.

Air tankers were on standby at nearby Cedar City, Utah, Hanefeld said.

Known as the Davies Fire, it was sparked by a lightning strike Monday afternoon. It was burning brush, grasses and pinon and juniper trees in steep, rugged terrain in Lincoln County, about 60 miles north of Las Vegas.
