Letter: English language is of primary importance

I read Robert Witcher's March 20 letter in the Sun headlined "Schools should teach English only."

It was encouraging to read a letter in which the writer was exactly right on this particular subject.

I am multilingual but the United States is my country and the language here is English - period. I have attended technical conferences in other countries and, almost without exception, all papers are presented in English.

Once in Stockholm I heard a Japanese individual speaking to a German and they were conversing in English. English is the language of business, commerce, technology, etc. If someone wants to be successful, they have to know the English language. English is the only language used in International Air Traffic Control.

For the schools to teach in anything but English is not only a terrible fiasco but is also failing their primary task of educating their students to be a successful and productive member of society.
