FLASHPOINT for Mar 22, 2006

What's the difference between a debate and a forum? A lot, according to organizers of a gubernatorial get-together Tuesday sponsored by the Women's Chamber of Commerce. Even though the campaign of debate-averse Jim Gibbons insisted he never considered backing out after I called it a debate, organizers were fretting until the front-runner arrived. Gibbons has said he won't debate until after filing or after the primary or after hell freezes over - I can't recall. But what could he say if this event Tuesday was called a debate? Wouldn't that set a precedent? Not really. If you call it a forum, it's not a debate. And there was less debating than one might have hoped. Just like most political debates. Or forums.
