John Katsilometes takes a look at the lavish Signature at MGM Grand and sees why 350 job postings got 30,000 hits

When employment opportunities were posted online for the Signature at MGM Grand, the site was quickly peppered with responses.

"We had 30,000 hits," Signature Executive Director Frederick Luvisutto said Wednesday morning during a media tour (including one hastily arranged for this straggler) of the resort's Tower 1, which opened in June.

That's for just 350 positions.

"The word of mouth is that people want to come here," Luvisutto said. It's easy to see why. Signature's services and amenities rival its rivals - The Hotel at Mandalay Place, Four Seasons, the Bellagio among them.

The property, which is positioned off Harmon Avenue just north of the MGM Grand, is non-gaming and non-smoking (though the MGM Grand is connected by a long walkway). An in-house Starbucks is in place (though not yet open for business) in Tower 1 and will also be a feature in Tower 3, which opens in May. Tower 2 opens in November, and each tower will have 576 suites with 16 units per floor.

A private gated entry leads into the property, and the suites range from 550 to 1,500 square feet and the rates start from $200 to $510 per night.

The idea at Signature is to provide a private luxury resort atmosphere while still maintaining the more dynamic trappings of Sin City - hence the draw of the MGM Grand next door. "We are striving for a personalized experience, where we can respond to any specialized request, and response has been very positive so far," said Luvisutto, grinning like a man holding a full house.

Friends of lieutenant governor candidate Barbara Lee Woollen tried to warn her about the travails of political campaigning. One told her, "It's more life-altering than getting married," and also advised her to be prepared for aggressive media scrutiny. Woollen ran anyway, and her campaign is unfolding as one of the wackiest stories of the summer. Check out the column in Wednesday's Sun by Jon Ralston, a captivating blow-by-blow of Woollen's news conference with Nevada Concerned Citizens head Richard Ziser, in which both Ziser and Ralston took umbrage at reports that Woollen's film equipment company, Cinelease, rented out equipment for use in the production of adult films. Whatever transpires, Woollen can retire to an ideal locale for R&R: The moneyed political aspirant and her husband, Bruce, maintain a 4,000-square-foot residence in Maui that sits on an acre of land and is estimated to be worth about $3 million ...

In honor of his honor's 67th birthday, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman was coerced out of his City Hall office on Wednesday afternoon for a photo op with members of "The Soprano's Last Supper." The "Soprano's" production is the dinner show at the newly renamed Harmon Theater at Krave (the title of the venue recently changed after the box office operations for the four shows staged there were consolidated). In June, the "Soprano's" troupe roasted Goodman at the U.S. Conference of Mayors at the Bellagio, and on Wednesday presented him with the script of that landmark event. Goodman was also presented a giant cake ...

Comic magician Nathan Burton, who headlines an afternoon show at V Theatre at the Desert Passage mall at the Aladdin, wowed the judges Wednesday night on NBC's "America's Got Talent." For his illusion, Burton vanished, only to reappear beside startled judge Brandy and was swiftly given a white check mark by all three judges. That meant he was among the 10 finalists . Voting results will be announced tonight ...
