F. Jay Harrell's fear in his July 1 letter - that the Supreme Court decision upholding fair trials for the detainees held at Guantanamo is a defeat for America that weakens our country - is mistaken.
The Supreme Court decision does just the opposite. It is a victory that has made us stronger for several reasons:
Hopefully, it also means we will ultimately decide we are a country that rejects the Bush administration's belief in unchecked presidential power, which has led to unbridled surveillance and intelligence policies that affect us all.
Our only regret should be that it takes us so long to make these decisions.
