Letter: Nothing redeeming in Bush administration
Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006 | 8:20 a.m.
It is nothing less than astounding that George Bush can reign with impunity and still have an American populace that deceives themselves into justifying his actions.
We now have a "long war," which has supplanted the "war on terror," an ever deepening sinkhole of debt and absolutely nothing to show for it - notwithstanding the complaints of Donald Rumsfeld that the media reports only bad news - almost 2,500 U.S. servicemen and women have been killed in action. We also have an environment subjected to the ravages of global warming while our policy is to shun Kyoto like the plague because it is "bad for business." We also have spying without warrants - despite the fact that provision has been made to do so within the law, even after the spying and eavesdropping. And, now, we have what should be the final straw: supervision of major operations at six U.S. ports by a company owned by the United Arab Emirates!
It can only be concluded that in Bush's MBA mind, this contract, which he has threatened to uphold through presidential veto if the U.S. Congress tries to block it, is "good for business" and that the threat to us citizens - with an Arab government in charge of an area of our greatest vulnerability - is of relatively little importance compared to the corporate benefit derived from the deal.
Anyone who is not entirely and unequivocally fed up with this administration either can't or won't get it. The truth is evident, from Katrina to the Middle East: incompetence, imperial arrogance and indifference.
