FLASHPOINT mar 14,2006

When I made the absurd leap last week that Rep. Jon Porter was exploiting the death of slain police officer Henry Prendes to introduce a bill stiffening penalties for cop killers, one of his aides accused me of having an "unfortunate" perspective. The caring congressman had gone so far as to get the widow's permission, he said - as if that grotesque intrusion into her grieving made it better. And, the apparatchik added, the sheriff supports the bill. But Bill Young, on "Face to Face" on Monday, said Porter had not spoken "to me about it. To my knowledge, I'm not aware that he actually visited the Prendes family." Young didn't seem eager to express support. How unfortunate.
