Letter: UNLV must take steps to improve

Every year the magazine US News & World Report issues a well-respected rating, a report card if you will, of America's colleges and universities. While UNR scored about half way down in the ratings, UNLV was in the fourth tier, near the bottom. UNLV can compete with the Mountain West Conference universities athletically, but academically it is rated dead last when compared to the other schools in its conference. It is also listed below the ratings for the public universities in the neighboring states of Utah, Arizona, California and, yes, below the University of Idaho. The new UNLV president, working with the regents, has to address this problem, and if raising the bar for applicants is needed, so be it.
