Letter: Pumping Alaska just a short-term solution

Lee S. Gliddon Jr., in his April 27 letter, complains about Democratic obstructionism in exploiting the Alaskan oil reserves and shale. Know what? As a lifelong Democrat and environmentalist, I agree with him.

But it really isn't Democrats opposing him, it is a somewhat different constituency, a constituency that confuses the issues. As a progressive Democrat, I say open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration (subject to environmental controls, of course).

Use up the oil, and meanwhile address the problems that oil causes, including the dependency on oil that our society engenders. It will only take a short time to do that. The Gliddons of the world don't really understand how shortsighted the Alaskan oil reserve issue is.
