Noted LV jazz musicians to be celebrated
Tuesday, April 18, 2006 | 7:15 a.m.
Professional jazz musicians in Las Vegas are invited to join in a photo shoot from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday on the front steps of the Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St.
Dubbed the "Las Vegas Jazz Masters Project," the event is being organized by Joanne Gilbert, who is host of the Web-based radio show "LIVE - From the REAL Las Vegas!" at 11 a.m. Fridays at alltalkradio.net.
"The purpose is to honor, document, publicize and preserve the contributions of Las Vegas jazz masters whose lives have been dedicated to jazz," said Gilbert, a member of the Las Vegas Jazz Society.
For more information, call Gilbert at 255-7552 or e-mail her at joanne@thereallasvegas.net.
"We are losing too many of our jazz greats too quickly - (drummer) Irv Kluger recently passed, and he had agreed to be in the photography," Gilbert said.
"And we're all so frustrated from hearing that jazz itself is dead - so with the generous help of some very special people, we have undertaken a huge project and publicity campaign to prove that jazz in Las Vegas is alive and thriving."
She said the photograph will be used for posters, T-shirts and other items to help raise money for scholarships and other jazz-related purposes.
"This will be our first annual group photo shoot," Gilbert said.
Members of the "Las Vegas Jazz Masters Project" advisory committee include Mary and Tony Scodwell, "Easy" Ed Millar, June and Gene Redden, Louise and Larry "Wild" Wrice and Gilbert.
