Letter: Free fare could boost monorail ridership
Tuesday, April 18, 2006 | 7:14 a.m.
The Las Vegas Monorail was built to service the connected casinos. It could even be used for ordinary transportation if you knew exactly where it was headed, and when. And if it went to where you wanted to go.
Nevertheless, it has been a losing proposition from the start. Why don't they wise up by offering free transportation to everyone for an indefinite period of time. If you never used it until now, you would give it a try, wouldn't you? So would thousands of other people. And what better way to get "used" to something than by trying it out without any obligation?
Think about how happy their advertisers would be. Think how many more people would be riding daily. Somebody could be selling lollypops to passengers for 10 cents a piece and make a small fortune.
Since the monorail will continue to take losses for who knows how much longer, they are being foolish to not take a drastic step as suggested above. A bit smarter than raising their fee from $3 to $5.
It wouldn't hurt their public image, would it?
