Letter: Why history will not be kind to Bush

We read the newspapers, we listen to the news, we consider the plunging approval rating for the Bush presidency, and then we scan the horizons for any sign of sanity in restraining the burgeoning number of the federal debt or the trade deficit, and there is none.

The Bush administration apparently thinks that rhetoric alone will solve our mounting problems. It won't.

Perhaps the wisdom of history will judge the George W. Bush presidency more kindly. After all, it seems thoughtful history has been kind to Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman.

Maybe history will be more forgiving to this administration. I personally don't think so. The abuses of this administration has scarred this nation to the extent that it would be virtually impossible for any student of history to forgive them.

We might ponder one final thought. If President Bill Clinton's enemies could dog him for eight years, spending millions investigating waste water (er, Whitewater), imagine his treatment had he committed the blunders of the Bush administration. It would make waste water (er, Whitewater) look like a two-line news item on Mount Airy's Republican News.
