Letter: Difference between profane and obscene
Saturday, April 8, 2006 | 7:28 a.m.
An April 1 editorial in the Las Vegas Sun was devoted to the widespread usage of "foul language" in our society. It then referred to such language as being profane. What has happened to the distinction between profanity and obscenity?
I was taught that profanities were exclusively those statements derogatory to some aspect of religion while obscenities referred to other expressions of foul language. It may be old-fashioned, but I prefer the distinction.
