NLV Police cite 98 during safety sting

North Las Vegas Police issued 98 traffic citations on Tuesday to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians and other violations during a traffic stop program at the 2200 block of Las Vegas Boulevard North.

The traffic stops are aimed at increasing pedestrian safety.

During North Las Vegas Police's eighth pedestrian safety event, police cited 65 drivers for failing to yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk and six drivers for failing to wear a seat belt, according to the police.

The police also cited three people for failing to properly restrain a child, among other citations.

The pedestrian safety program is designed to inform the public of the pedestrian right-of-way laws through enforcement. Under state law, pedestrians "own" the sidewalk and vehicles in both directions must not enter a crosswalk when a person is walking through it.

Violating this law can result in a $190 ticket.

The police carry out the $20,000 grant by setting up "sting" operations at various crosswalks in North Las Vegas where a police officer, dressed as a civilian, walks in a crosswalk and reports on drivers who do not obey the law.

Police on Tuesday were stationed on Las Vegas Boulevard and the 2200 block of Civic Center Drive, North Las Vegas Police stated.

Since the program started in June, the North Las Vegas Police have issued more than 350 citations, police reported.

There are two remaining traffic stops scheduled, according to police.
