Rebels upset Northwestern

UNLV's freshman midfielder Lamar Neagle scored the golden goal just after the start of the second overtime to give the Rebels a 2-1 upset victory against Northwestern on the second day of the UNLV Adidas Classic on Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

With the win, the Rebels evened their record at 2-2, and finished play in their home tournament with a 2-0 record for the first time in four years. Northwestern, ranked 15th by Soccer America, dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

The Rebels scored their first goal in the 37th minute, as Nicholas Paterson's corner kick into the box was deflected by a Wildcat defender right to Deshawn Woolery, who tied the game at 1-1 with a shot to the top right corner.

The tie did increase UNLV's unbeaten streak to five games, tying the school record, as the Rebels (3-1-2) have not lost since the season opener.

Goosen wins third title in six weeks

At Pulheim, Germany, Retief Goosen missed a 5-foot par putt on the 18th hole but escaped with a one-stroke victory at the German Masters for his third title in six weeks.

The two-time U.S. Open champion led by two shots entering the last hole and closed with a 5-under 67 to finish at 20-under 268.

Henrik Stenson (68), Jose Maria Olazabal (66), Nick Dougherty (68) and David Lynn (67) all finished at 269 in the $3.8 million tournament.

Scott took the lead after completing the rain-interrupted third round Sunday morning. He then made five birdies and an eagle against one bogey to finish at 13-under 271 in the Asian Tour event.

At Sandy, Utah, former PGA tour winner Garrett Willis shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory on the Nationwide Tour.

Willis, who won the 2001 Tucson Open in his first PGA tour start, made birdie on two of his first three holes and finished at 13-under 275. He is the first former tour winner to take a Nationwide event since Guy Boros won the 2003 Dayton Open. -- Sun wire services
