Letter: We all need to help the less fortunate
Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005 | 8:03 a.m.
Recently, there was a collection drive for food for the needy in our neighborhood. Sadly, very few families left food on their doorsteps. This incident challenges the assertion of some of my "libertarian" friends that we don't need any social programs to aid our less-fortunate fellow citizens because "charity and compassion" of individuals will take care of them.
We don't think that the lack of bags on the doorsteps was a sign of a political challenge. Absentmindedness was probably the reason. Our lives are busy; we forget about some of these details, such as when the food and clothing pickups will happen.
All the more reason for us not to rely solely on private charity. We all need reminders encouraging us to be model citizens.
When we think of the relative prosperity that we Americans have (especially viewing the preponderance of late-model gas-guzzling SUVs that are ubiquitous in the city), it would do us all much good to reflect on our blessings and consider helping the needy -- especially during the upcoming holiday season.
