Charities seek turkey donations
Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005 | 8:30 a.m.
Major Las Vegas charities need more than 1,200 fresh or frozen turkeys to fill Thanksgiving food baskets for poor families beginning today.
Catholic Charities has 200 turkeys in stock but needs 600 more for its food baskets that will be handed out Monday through Wednesday, said Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada spokeswoman Sharon Mann.
"We told our social services clients that their food baskets next week will have turkeys," Mann said.
Rodney Hill of the Las Vegas Rescue Mission said his agency, which will give out 1,400 food baskets to the poor starting today, was 500 turkeys short of that goal.
And Maj. William Raihl, Clark County coordinator for the Salvation Army, says his agency has 125 turkeys for its food baskets for the poor, but needs another 125 more to meet projected demand.
To help the Salvation Army Clark County Command, call 870-4430. To help the Las Vegas Rescue Mission call 382-1766. To help Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, call 385-2662.
