Fishing report: Windy, cool days chill out hot spots

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

Fishing was particularly good over the weekend in the Overton Arm, where boaters were catching 2-pound stripers at St. Thomas, Fish Island, Fire Cove and Ann Marguret Cove. Largemouth bass were taken over the weekend at Fish Island and the Muddy River.

NDOW creel census clerks saw a bluegill that weighed approximately three-quarters of a pound. A boater fishing in a cove immediately south of Echo Bay caught the fish.

Last week, anglers were finding shad in Las Vegas Wash and netting them for use as bait to catch stripers. Boaters were also using anchovies to catch the fish in that area.

A few stripers were caught from shore at Hemenway Harbor last week, including a 15-pounder taken with a Pencil Popper, but that action came to an end due to the winds. Persistent anglers who fish early in the mornings with anchovies should be able to catch several 2-pound stripers.

NDOW biologists believe that the fishing should improve as the winds subside and warmer weather returns to the lake.

Another group of anglers fishing in the area of mile markers 28 and 29 reported good success for small stripers that averaged 15 inches. The fish were all caught within 20 minutes and were taken with nightcrawlers.

Most of the 35 anglers who were on hand for last week's rainbow trout plant at Willow Beach caught fish; however, few 10-trout limits were taken. One angler told NDOW that he caught 6 trout by fishing with a small amount of orange PowerBait on a size 18 treble hook. The next trout plant was planned for today.

Daniel Maes, area installation technician, said that because of the weather, the fishing has been slow. A few rainbow trout that measured 11 inches were creeled, but most fish were the 11-inch stockers.
