Letter: Republic’s idea disguises cutback
Wednesday, May 4, 2005 | 9:20 a.m.
Kudos for your April 19 editorial criticizing the consideration by Republic Services of a negative change to our garbage pickup. All of your points are right on target.
Cutting back services in the name of improving recycling efforts is simply a smoke screen. The reality is that that we the people will be saddled with the stink and clutter of accumulated garbage. Recycling will suffer too, as it will no longer be separated by the customer. Quite possibly it will end up in the dump. And those big containers Republic Services is offering to provide -- they will end up being blown around the streets.
If the County Commission were to ever grant such a proposal, the door would be open for Republic Services to come around later on and ask for another concession that will be to its benefit.
