Letter: Helmet law saves many lives

I'm writing in response to the letter by Jim Canfield, which you published March 17. He expressed his opposition to Nevada's law requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets. I disagree with his view. I rode a bike for years. One day I wasn't going to wear my helmet, but my riding partner talked me into wearing it. That was fortunate, because, sure enough, on our ride I slipped going around a corner and I fell on my head.

Head injuries are something that people should want to avoid at all costs. Although it wasn't caused by a motorcycle accident, I have one. I was in a coma for three weeks and underwent three months of rehabilitation.

One of Canfield's complaints was that sometimes insects get inside his helmet while he's riding. Well, if he got a full-coverage helmet that wouldn't happen.

Just like seat belts, helmets need to be worn. If the rider himself isn't concerned about his own well being, he should wear the helmet anyway, for his family.
