Letter: Keep guarantees of Social Security

President Bush has been forced to sell the privatization of Social Security the way he sold the war in Iraq by misrepresenting the dangers of nonexistent WMD. Citizens are coming to now recognize that the hyped "mushroom cloud" crisis of Social Security's solvency cannot be solved by privatization.

Americans are learning the facts, including that Social Security can meet 100 percent of its obligations for the next 37 years with no changes to the current system.

As a senior, dependent on Social Security to get by, I now know that there are things we should do to make Social Security stronger. I also know the president's plan to privatize would cut my benefits and unravel our nation's most successful anti-poverty program. I also know it would burden my children and grandchildren with heavy debt, all while enriching the president's Wall Street contributors.

I understand that without Social Security, almost half of today's seniors would live in poverty. It just doesn't make sense to replace a guaranteed benefit with a guaranteed gamble.
