Salvation Army gets piece of MASH property

The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday approved the transfer of another piece of the former MASH Village homeless shelter property to the Salvation Army and is scheduled to vote on transferring the last piece of the site on April 6.

The council voted 6-0 to sell 3.2 acres near the intersection of Main Street and Owens Avenue to the Salvation Army for $10. The Salvation Army plans to build as many as 100 apartments for low-income families on the land.

Councilman Michael Mack abstained from the vote because his parents own land nearby.

Two weeks ago the council approved the sale of adjacent land on the former MASH site to Shade Tree for $10. Shade Tree, which provides shelter to homeless and abused women and children, plans to use the property to expand its parking lot and add a playground and patio area.

The third piece of the property, 4.8 acres, is proposed to be sold for $10 to HELP Las Vegas Housing Corp. II, which plans to build 200 apartments there. The council was scheduled to vote on the HELP sale on Wednesday, but the vote was postponed until April 6. Steve Houchens, a deputy city manager, said the delay was needed to complete the required paperwork, and he did not expect any changes to the original proposal.
