Letter: Federal budget should benefit all

Your newspaper, the Las Vegas Sun, is absolutely right in its assessment of President Bush's proposed budget cuts. I was delighted to see that you cut through the rhetoric to see the truth in your March 4 editorial. These cuts make the poor poorer while the huge tax cuts make the rich richer and further balloon our federal deficit.

What is Christ-like about denying health care to children or cutting programs such as child-care assistance to help families out of poverty? The crisis is not in Social Security but in health care, fuel, housing and jobs with real benefits.

While we now claim to be in Iraq to bring its people a brighter future, let us also meet the needs of families here at home, so that our children may also know a bright future. "Love thy neighbor as thyself" needs to be applied at home, too. We need legislation that helps all of us, not just a wealthy few.
