Commission postpones action on land swap for casino

Friday, March 11, 2005 | 9:58 a.m.

CHANDLER, Okla. -- Members of the School Land Trust board say they need more time before agreeing to a land swap that could mean a lucrative casino complex on school trust land.

The Sac & Fox nation has proposed a casino-hotel complex near Chandler, along the Turner Turnpike and could begin operations in less than two years, said Ben Walkingstick, a banker who owns the school land lease.

The state School Land Trust on Thursday postponed action on a land swap between the trust, the Sac & Fox Nation and the Chandler Industrial Corp.

Sac & Fox Principal Chief Kay Rhoads said the tribe is prepared to invest several million dollars into turning 74 acres of state school land into a tourism destination with a large-scale casino, hotel, shopping center and movie theater.
