Mining hazards to be discussed

The Labor Department's Mine Safety and Health Administration will conduct a free workshop Wednesday at the Fiesta, Henderson, to address the special hazards produced by the onset of warmer weather at the nation's mining operations.

The workshop will focus on effective safety and health system, safe maintenance and repair activities, and the hazards associated with restarting intermittent mining operations. Workshop leaders will discuss mining hazards that are characteristic in certain regions of the country and will include best solutions recognized to eliminate those hazards and create a culture of safety within the mining industry.

Lecture on marimba planned

A lecture on "The Marimba in the 21st Century: Nevada's Contribution to an International Art Form" will be presented 7:30 tonight in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on the UNLV campus.

UNLV's Department of Music lecturer Timothy Jones will examine the development of the six-mallet marimba technique and perform a number of six-mallet works. The six-mallet technique requires an advanced mastery of the instrument that only a few have been able to accomplish.

A free National Craft Month celebration

will be 5-6:30 p.m. Monday at the Stupak Community Center, 300 W. Boston Ave. All ages can make different crafts to share with the family. Call 229-2488.

Temple Beth Am will hold a Purim Carnival

10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at the temple, 9001 Hillpointe Road. The event will offer games for kids of all ages, face painting, crafts, a bounce house, a 12-foot slide, music, food and entertainment. There will also be a demonstration by West Coast Martial Arts.

Husband-wife singing duo, the Cunninghams,

will perform 2 p.m. Sunday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. The two will perform a mix of their jazz favorites plus "Taboo," and "Quiet Village." Tickets are $15; $10 for seniors and students under 12; $7 for Jazz Society members. Call 455-7340.

Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge

will be hosting a volunteer day 9 a.m.-noon March 19. Participants will have the rare opportunity to get a sneak peek of the refuge, which is currently under reconstruction and not yet open to the public, as well as help save wildlife. The Nevada Chamber Symphony
