Nellis journalists hit Bullseye

Three Nellis Air Force base newspaper staff members were recently honored by Air Combat Command Headquarters for their efforts in writing and photography for the base's weekly newspaper the Bullseye.

Staff Sgt. Lucia Newman was awarded first place for sports writing in the command's annual Media Contest, which honors the best journalism and photojournalism work in base newspapers, according to an Air Combat Command public affairs release.

Tech. Sgt. Kevin Gruenwald was awarded second place in the stand-alone photo category, and a second place for photography also went to civilian Julie Ray of the Bullseye in the contribution by contractor/stringer category, as well as for writing.

Newman will now compete in the Air Force Media Contest sponsored annually by the secretary of the Air Force office of public affairs and conducted by the Air Force News Service at Headquarters Air Force News Agency, San Antonio.

It will be the 48th such competition. Awards are presented to units and individuals for outstanding achievements in furthering the objectives of the Air Force internal information program.

A base newspaper has been published at Nellis since November 1941 when the Bullseye's predecessor, the Horned Toadm was first published by mimeograph machine.

"By 7 July 1951 the base newspaper was renamed the Bullseye," according to a chronology of the base provided by the Air Warfare Center History Office.

In brief
