Workshop for volunteers set

Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada will present a workshop on preparing for effective use of spontaneous volunteers in disaster at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mojave Training Center, 861 N. Mojave Road.

The training will give stakeholders in disaster response crucial information on how to plan for effective use of spontaneous volunteers.

The event is in partnership with Metro Police volunteers and sponsored by Nevada Power. Training is provided by Volunteer Florida, the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.

Thomas & Mack seeking interns

The Thomas & Mack Center is seeking interns to help host the Reebok Vegas Summer League, July 6-15 and the Global Hoops Summit, July 16-21 at the Cox Pavilion.

Interns will help organize and coordinate the operations and management of the games. Interns will be stationed in the media/player entrances, phone rooms, and on the court to help with stats, as well as other various duties as assigned. Additionally, interns may assist with on-site staffing for NBA 2K6 video game stations. Interns will be responsible for distributing materials, overseeing gamers, and coordinating logistics with the video game contestants. Meeting set for volunteer managers

Two corporate volunteer managers will present "Motivating Employees to Volunteer," during the Corporate Volunteer Council meeting at 8 a.m. June 30 in the Renaissance Room of the Stratosphere.

The council encourages and supports workplace volunteering by offering workshops, networking and resources for corporate volunteer managers. Call 892-2323 for more information.

Navy League dinner meeting set

The Navy League of the United States will hold a dinner meeting beginning with no-host cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Acapulco Room at Fiesta Rancho.

The meeting is open to the public. Reservations are required. The cost is $20. Call 341-7617.

Radio preparedness exercise planned

An annual exercise aimed at developing skills to meet the challenges of emergency preparedness as well as to acquaint the general public with the capabilities of Amateur Radio, Field Day will take place between noon Saturday and noon Sunday. Stations throughout the Americas will participate.

With more than a hundred active members and a fully equipped radio station, the Las Vegas Amateur Radio Club is one of the state's oldest radio clubs, having been founded in 1960.

Amateur Radio provided an essential link in coordinating the emergency response to the Sept. 11 attacks, when cell phones and other communications methods became overloaded and unusable.
