Letter: Crack down on unsafe cabbies
Wednesday, June 22, 2005 | 9:47 a.m.
The suggestion of cameras in cabs is a great idea. It would show who is in the taxi as well as their conduct. This would certainly be effective in identifying a perpetrator of a crime against the driver.
What would be beneficial to pedestrians and fellow motorists, though, is to have cameras that monitor cab drivers who are rude, commit flagrant traffic violations and have that "gotta get the next fare" attitude. I work downtown and I see cab drivers committing traffic violations on a daily basis.
I have had my pedestrian right-of-way in crosswalks violated daily. I have seen cab drivers fail to make complete stops at red lights prior to right turns. I have seen them casually run red lights and exceed the speed limits. On one occasion I saw a cab driver stop his cab and yell obscenities at another driver, stopping just short of challenging the other driver to a fight.
It is time for the Nevada Taxicab Authority to crack down on shoddy cab driving as well as criminals who harass or assault cab drivers.
