National Guard open house set

The Nevada Army National Guard will host an open house 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Clark County Armory, 6400 N. Range Road. The open house is free and open to the public.

The open house will feature a barbecue, static displays of military vehicles, and military demonstrations. Soldiers will be on hand to answer questions about the resources and capabilities of the Nevada National Guard and potential opportunities in the Nevada Army Guard.

Financial planning seminar scheduled

Central Christian Church is hosting a financial planning seminar titled "Designing Your Legacy" 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at the church, 1001 New Beginnings Drive, Henderson (Russell Road and the 95).

Firefighters event to focus on safety

The Clark County Fire Department will present the National Firefighter Safety "Stand Down" event 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at the CCFD Training Center, 4425 W. Tropicana Ave.

CCFD will suspend all nonemergency activity and focus on firefighter safety over the next three days to provide special training session for on-duty personnel to raise awareness of the need for increased vigilance toward firefighter safety.

Topics include the National Firefighter Near Miss Reporting System, the Safety Stand Down Website, Incident Safety Scenarios and Firefighter Wellness.

Parade to celebrate Old Miner's Day

The historic community of Chloride will celebrate Old Miner's Day with mock gunfights, a parade, vendors, games and dancing and a parade at noon Saturday starting on Tennessee Avenue. Chloride is located east of Highway 93, on County Route 125. Call 928-4888 for more information.

Safe Sitter courses at UMC

University Medical Center will offer free Safe Sitter classes to adolescents age 11 to 13. Safe Sitter classes teach would-be babysitters how to handle emergencies when caring for children.

The two-day program covers basic child care, how to call for emergency help, first aid, safety, and babysitting business skills. A certificate is given to participants upon successful completion pf the Safe Sitter program.

These Safe Sitter classes are held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Family Resource Center at UMC, 1120 Shadow Lane: June 23 and 24; July 7, 8, 21, 22, Aug. 4, 5, 18 and 19.

Scholarship foundation board to meet

The National Council of Meridianites/Jacquelyn Sweetner Caffey Scholarship Foundation Board will meet at 9 p.m. tonight and the eighth annual National Council luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, both at the Las Vegas Hilton.
