Glass wins three on upset stomach
Playing through stomach pains, three-time Professional Bowlers Association Senior Player of the Year Bob Glass beat Vaughn Doody of Las Vegas (739-723), Gary Skidmore of Albuquerque (688-588) and Rohn Morton of Camas, Wash. (697-689), in three-game matches to remain in the winners' bracket of the ABC Senior Masters at the Suncoast Bowling Center.
"I'm having stomach problems and I have to watch what I eat," said the 57-year-old Glass. "I've been more lucky than good so far and it seems like I'm just feeling my way through today."
When Glass won the 2001 Senior Masters, he had to nurse a bad back throughout most of that tournament.
"It seems like I just can't enjoy my success in this tournament," he said. "Hopefully I'll be feeling better tomorrow."
Top Senior Masters qualifier Ross Packard of San Jose, Calif., also won his three matches to remain in the winners' bracket.
Las Vegan Ron DeGroat remains undefeated, as well.
Mauresmo loses to qualifier
At Eastbourne, England, top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo lost to Russian qualifier Vera Douchevina 6-4, 6-4 in the second round at Eastbourne.
Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova also struggled before beating Anna Chakvetadze 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) in 1 hour, 50 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.
Also, fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia lost 6-2, 7-6 (5) against qualifier Roberta Vinci of Italy, fourth-seeded Anastasia Myskina defeated Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela 6-4, 5-7, 6-0, and eighth-seeded Nathalie Dechy of France rallied to beat Amy Frazier 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Third-seeded Alicia Molik withdrew, still hampered by an ear infection that kept her out of the French Open. She also will miss Wimbledon.
The 6-foot-10 Karlovic will now play 5-foot-5 Olivier Rochus of Belgium in the quarterfinals. Rochus defeated Karol Beck of Slovakia 6-4, 6-3.
Fourth-seeded Richard Gasquet of France topped wild card Jonathan Marray 6-4, 6-1 to set up a matchup with defending champion Paradorn Srichaphan, who beat Jan Vacek of the Czech Republic 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).
Second-seeded Thomas Johansson overcame Tomas Berdych 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8) to advance to the quarterfinals against Taylor Dent, who defeated fellow American Travis Rettenmaier 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Lars Burgsmuller, a 30-year-old German who hadn't won a match in his last eight tournaments, ousted Robredo 6-2, 7-6 (5).
