Cold days ahead, snow possible in Sierra, northern Nevada

There's a four-letter word in Nevada's forecast: Snow.

A strong storm out of the Gulf of Alaska was to push into the Lake Tahoe Basin and northern Nevada on Thursday, bringing wind, rain and - above 7,500 feet - snow.

Following the storm's path, a wave of cold temperatures was expected to drop temperatures to freezing at the lake Friday night with lows in the valleys dropping into the 30s in places.

The outlook calls for as much as 3 inches of snow above 8,000 feet by Friday morning and more snow Friday night. Winds could exceed 100 mph over the northern Sierra, making for some unexpectedly nasty driving conditions for this time of year.

Weather service forecaster Jon Bonk said the storm is more typical of the type that occurs in winter, and not five days before summer begins.

"It is an unusually cold weather event for this year, unusual because of the temperatures that are coming along with it," Bonk said.

"It could make for some chilly camping," he added.

The cold temperatures will put the shivers in fledgling plants, some of which got an earlier shock from a freeze last week.
