State champion has rough first round

A month ago, Adam Tebbs was beating the competition -- and the conditions -- on his way to the 4A golf championship in Reno.
No sleet or wind Tuesday, just clear and sunny skies -- but Tebbs' first-round performance in the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship at Angel Park leaves a dark cloud over his second round today.
Tebbs shot a five-over 76, placing him 11 strokes back of Eddie Olson and Joel Dahmen, both tied for the boys' lead of the American Junior Golf Association event.
"My driver just wasn't working today," Tebbs said. "I was hitting them way right. My line was fine, my putting was fine, I just had four penalty strokes which is not going to help at all."
Tebbs is by no means an AJGA regular -- this is just his fourth event on the tour -- but he said he was impressed by the caliber of competition out there.
"There are a lot better players on the AJGA course," he said. "It was kind of intimidating a little. I felt the same amount of pressure -- just the quality of players is a lot better."
He said he planned a visit late Tuesday to the driving range to fix that problem.
"I think I can hopefully -- if I spend long enough find something to use it out there tomorrow," he said. "I'll get a better score tomorrow."
