Man killed trying to protect woman

A man who was trying to protect his friend from her violent boyfriend was shot and killed in a downtown Las Vegas apartment Tuesday morning, Metro Police said.

Witnesses told police that a woman was trying to get away from her boyfriend, 39-year-old Jose Luis Cordova, and sought shelter and protection in her friends' apartment in the 500 block of North 14th Street near Bonanza Road.

She hoped Cordova wouldn't find her there, Homicide Lt. Tom Monahan said, but he did. Cordova showed up at the apartment about 9:30 a.m., and when the victim answered the door, the victim lied and said the girlfriend wasn't there.

Cordova then shot the man, killing him, Monahan said.

Police are searching for Cordova, also known as "Canica," in connection with the homicide. He is 5 feet 6 inches and 160 pounds. He is missing his left eye, Monahan said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or police at 229-3521.

Vacant apartments destroyed by fire

A vacant apartment building near Flamingo Road and Nellis Boulevard was destroyed by fire early this morning, county fire officials said.

The blaze started about 1 a.m. in the eight-unit building in the 3000 block of Perry Street. The building was slated for demolition, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Bob Leinbach said.

Investigators determined the fire broke out in a first-floor stairwell. The cause was undetermined this morning, Leinbach said. The loss was estimated at $5,000.

Bail denied for four in slaying

A Boulder City judge denied bail for four people who allegedly conspired to kill a man who bad-mouthed a local strip club.

Anabel Espindola, 33, and Luis Hidalgo III, 24, allegedly hired a Palomino Club employee, 24-year-old Deangelo Carroll, to arrange the death of Timothy J. Hadland. Carroll then allegedly conspired with Kenneth Counts, 29, to shoot Hadland for $6,000. Hadland's body was found May 19 on North Shore Road at Lake Mead with fliers for the Palomino Club scattered around his body.

The four have been charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit murder.

They appeared in a preliminary hearing at Boulder City Justice Court Monday where Justice of the Peace Victor Miller ruled there was enough evidence to send Espindola, Hidalgo III and Counts to trial.

Carroll waived his right to a preliminary hearing at the time and will answer charges against him in District Court.

The four defendants are to be in district court June 27. District Judge Donald Mosely is to preside over the case.

Alleged gang member arrested

A 27-year-old alleged gang member who was wanted on a murder charge from Chicago was arrested Tuesday in Las Vegas by the U.S. Marshals led-Nevada Fugitive Investigative Strike Team.

Members of the team spotted Arthur Foote near Rancho Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard Tuesday morning, said Fidencio Rivera, Acting U.S. Marshal for the District of Nevada. Foote allegedly tried to escape by ramming an officer's vehicle and running away. He ran into the Fiesta Rancho and was captured.

Foote was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he will remain pending extradition to Illinois, authorities said.

Foote is accused of shooting and killing a man in Chicago in February 2003. The victim was shot because Foote and other gang members believed he was giving information to law enforcement, authorities allege.

Dog shot, then euthanized

A Metro Police officer shot and wounded a dog that charged at a city animal control officer Tuesday afternoon on Bruce Street near Bonanza Road, police said.

A resident flagged down a police officer about three large dogs, believed to be Rottweiler mixes, running loose. An animal control officer came to the neighborhood, and while a plan was being formulated to gain control of the dogs, one of them charged at the animal control officer, Officer Jose Montoya, Metro spokesman, said.

The officer fired two rounds at the dog. The owner requested that animal control euthanize the animal, so the dog was put down by animal control, Montoya said.

This was the second dog shot by police in just over two weeks. On May 31 a Metro officer shot and killed a pit bull who charged at the officer in a yard on Linn Lane near Washington Avenue.
