Company raises sales, margin forecasts on laptop demand

Intel Corp., the world's biggest computer-chip maker, said second-quarter revenue will beat its previous forecasts, propelled by surging sales of laptops.

Sales will rise to $9.1 billion to $9.3 billion, exceeding the $8.6 billion to $9.2 billion predicted in April, Santa Clara, California-based Intel said in a statement today. Intel raised its gross margin prediction to about 57 percent from about 56 percent, helped by lower costs and sales of more profitable chips.

Intel is reaping the benefits of efforts by Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini to add new versions of the Centrino laptop chips. Otellini is also pushing engineers to enhance features such as wireless Internet access rather than just wrenching up a chip's speed.
