Bishop Gorman's Park wins match
The 2002 Girls' Junior champion, In-Bee Park, 17, birdied four holes in eliminating Stephanie Kono, 15, of Honolulu, 3 and 2. Then she defeated Lila Barton of Dallas 2 and 1.
Stephanie Connelly defeated medalist Taylore Karle 2 and 1, advancing along with U.S. Women's Open runner-up Morgan Pressel in match play at BanBury Golf Club.
Earlier Wednesday, in the first round, Connelly beat Ashley Freeman 1-up, while Karle defeated Melissa Mabanta 5 and 4.
Karle, 15, from Scottsdale, Ariz., posted a 12-under 130 on Tuesday to claim medal honors, breaking the record of 133 total set by Christina Kim in 2001.
The other top seeds -- Angela Park, 16, of Torrance, Calif., and Esther Choe, 15, of Scottsdale, Ariz. -- also were defeated in the first round.
Pressel, of Boca Raton, Fla., hit every green in regulation as she cruised past Corrine Carr, 16, of Pinehurst, N.C., 7 and 5. Pressel, 17, won the final five holes. Earlier, she beat Aimee Neff 6 and 4.
Tiger Woods' niece, Cheyenne Woods of Phoenix, Ariz., defeated fellow 14-year-old Kristina Wong of Vestal, N.Y., in 19 holes. In the first round, Woods beat Becca Huffer 1-up.
Palmer's grandson gains second round
At Longmeadow, Mass., Arnold Palmer's 17-year-old grandson, Sam Saunders, and defending champion Sihwan Kim won their opening matches.
Saunders, of Windemere, Fla., was 4 under through 13 holes and beat Benjamin Blundell of Rowlett, Texas, 6 and 5. Saunders will face Kevin Tway, the son of PGA Tour player Bob Tway, in today's second round at Longmeadow Country Club.
Kim, of Fullerton, Calif., made par on the first playoff hole to beat Jacob Low of Hilo, Hawaii. The match ended when Low missed a 3-foot par putt on the first extra hole.
The top nine seeded players advanced.
