Pioneer Day celebrations set

To celebrate Pioneer Day, three stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Henderson will host a parade and fair on July 23.

Pioneer day celebrates the day when Brigham Young and other members of The Church arrived in Great Salt Lake Valley -- July 24, 1847. The first Mormon pioneers arrived in the Las Vegas Valley on June 14, 1855. Six years ago Ken Asay, president of the Green Valley LDS stake, decided to celebrate pioneer day, a tradition he picked up when he lived in Utah.

"It's a part of our culture," Asay said. "My vision for this was to recognize the sacrifices on the part of many people who immigrated into Salt Lake Valley."

This is the second year the Anthem and Warm Springs LDS stakes will join in the events. A stake is a geographical subdivision of the LDS church.

The parade is to begin at 9 a.m. and will be followed by breakfast, square- dancing, a dunk tank, live entertainment and quilt-making. About 2,500 people are expected to participate at the events at the Fox Ridge Park in Green Valley and at the LDS building on the corner of Valle Verde and Fox Ridge drives.

The event is open to the public and those wishing to participate should call Regina Sommer at 896-7452.
